Book Club

Interested in Living the Vida Lola for your book club?   Try these discussion questions on for size.

1. First generation immigrants often feel caught ‘in between’ two cultural groups: their family’s culture and American society.  Lola straddles these two cultures in several ways.  Discuss the obvious ways she consciously creates an identity in each culture, and the more subtle ways she balances the cultures.

2. Cultural expectations often interfere with how a person lives their life.  How does Lola uphold the expectations her family holds for her, and how does she break free of these expectations?  Which of these are cultural, verses gender expectations?

3. Many people feel that someone from ‘outside’ an ethnic group cannot effectively write a person from that ethnic or cultural group.  How authentic do you find Lola to be?

4. Is Jack or Manny a better counterpart to Lola?

For some fun-loving questions, try these:

1. What is Lola’s sexiest or sassiest moment?

2. Is Manny or Jack hotter?

3. Should Lola and Jack have done the horizontal salsa in Living the Vida Lola?

You get the idea!!!  Have fun with it, and let me know how it goes at your book club by shooting me an email.
